Rubbish is a part of a child’s life

The book, What happens to all our rubbish? Wondered the very curious Red Bin, by Mika Grachyk,  is a great way to introduce young children to the world of recycling and responsible rubbish disposal. Aimed at pre-schoolers and early-schoolers, this book is engaging and introduces these concepts in a fun way. Children will learn about what happens to the rubbish once it has been collected and taken away by the garbage trucks, through the misadventures of the three curious bins. The bins themselves teach young children the importance of friendship and the importance of looking out for one another. The Yellow and Green Bins both show concern for the Red Bin when he doesn’t return from his ride in the garbage truck. Concern and empathy are both important concepts for pre-schoolers to learn at this age, which this book successfully achieves. The illustrations are simple, bright and fun, perfect for this age group.

The fact that this book was inspired by a real-life interest of a young child and that this child is included in the story itself, gives the book a true feel of legitimacy. Rubbish is a part of life, and something a toddler or pre-schooler will have an interest in at least once during their development. This story is great for capturing that interest group and engaging with the children as they learn.       Critique by: Australian Self Publishing Group  May 2019
